February 21, 2021 MISD School Community, On Tuesday, February 16, 2021, during the MISD Board Meeting, it was decided that all our school sites will re-open for in-person learning. We would like to thank all our staff and community members that attended the recent board meeting. Mora High School will re-open in a hybrid model on February 23, 2021 for Juniors and Seniors and February 24, 2021 for Freshmen and Sophomores. Lazaro Garcia Middle School and Mora/Holman Elementary will reopen on March 15, 2021. A survey was sent out earlier this month and parents had the option to allow their children to attend school via the hybrid model or to choose to keep their children in a remote setting for the remainder of the school year, if they felt it is a better option. Due to NMPED requirements, in-person learning will look different this year. If you requested that your children attend school via the hybrid model you will be receiving correspondence on policy and procedures. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the office at 575-387-3123. Thank you, Lefonso Castillo, Principal

MISD Students, Parents, Staff and School Community, Our school community is ecstatic with the announcement from the Governor's office authorizing the re-entry of our students for in-person learning K-12. After an extensive review of the tool-kit that outlines procedures for re-entry we have created a short survey that needs to be completed by Wednesday, February 3rd. This will help fine tune a re-entry plan and determine a possible date for our students to return to school. Yours in Leadership and Learning, Lefonso Castillo Please click on the link below to complete the survey. ***Fill out one survey for each child enrolled at MISD Grades K-12.** https://forms.gle/t3tcTKCtC5UK9oHZ9

January 28, 2021 Mora Independent School District Students and Parents: First, let us thank you for your support and understanding as we, as a nation and community, responded to the unexpected invasion of COVID-19 last March that shut down our in-person learning. We are very proud of the way our MISD students, parents, employees, and community leaders handled the demands we were faced with to protect everyone as we continued to educate and feed our students during the most unusual of circumstances. As you are aware, Governor Grisham has authorized middle and high schools to re-open for in-person leaning as early as February 8th. Please note that the school district did not receive notice of re-entry prior to the Governor’s address. Our desire is to return to school as normal (traditional) with enhanced safety and cleaning procedures. Our elementary school will begin to re-open further and more information will be distributed by the elementary in the near future. The New Mexico Public Education Department has forwarded each school district expanded guidelines for in-person learning. Plans are being developed for re-entry and we will notify our community of the opening date as soon as we receive our site inspection and approval by NMPED. We will be gathering input from our school community which includes parents, employees, community stakeholders, medical professionals and our administrators via surveys which will be sent out in the near future. It is more important than ever that each and every parent submit a survey for each child so we can get an accurate count of students who wish to return to in-person learning. This will determine which Hybrid-Learning Option we need to utilize when we re-open. Please note that each student has the option to return to in-person learning or remain in the remote-learning setting. Thank you again for all you are doing to help your children learn, connect with their teachers, and continue important daily routines. If you have any question for us not addressed here, you may contact us. Mora Community, We have made it through a very trying year, we have witnessed deep divisions form in our country and state and have dealt with hardships both personal and professional. We also know that not all learning occurs at school. With that in mind, I want the students of Mora Independent Schools to have a snow day to watch history unfold, celebrate your family, and reflect on how we can come together and create a better community for all of us. It is not a day off, it is an opportunity for you to reflect on what is truly important. I would like our students to watch historical events, build a snowman, or simply appreciate the day and recharge. Teachers, you are appreciated, your principal will provide you with a meeting link for a district wide staff meeting. Sincerely, Marvin MacAuley Superintendent

Dear Community, I wanted to give you some information about our current status and the prospect of moving back into the hybrid model for the elementary school. Last night, the School Board decided to return back into hybrid learning on January 18th for the elementary school as allowed by NM PED and following established re-entry guidelines provided to us from NM PED. The School Board did allow flexibility and has allowed that the start date be fluid dependent on infection rates within our School District. This means if infection rates are high, we do not have to start hybrid learning on the 18th we can wait until infection rates decrease. In preparation for directly servicing students, we are required to complete surveillance testing for 10% of all staff who potentially may be in contact students for a two week period. In addition we have installed required MERV-13 air filtration and also have HEPA air purifiers for additional safety measures for our students and staff. All safety protocols will be followed should we return to the hybrid learning model. We still do not have a start date for middle school or high school, the start date has to come from the NM PED. Stay safe! Marvin MacAuley

An additional 200 chromebooks was ordered as soon as we received budget authorityof our CARES Act funding earlier this summer. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a nation wide shortage of chromebooks as most schools moved into a virtual environment. We made the decision to limit our existing chromebooks (89) to one per household in order to maximize the number of families that can receive the devices. Once we receive our shipment of chromebooks, we will distribute them to families that request them. We know this is a difficult time for everybody, please contact your principals if you need additional support for turning in work, obtaining materials etc. We are in this together, and hopefully sooner than later we can return to school in person. We certainly miss our students.

Please click on the links on the Mora High School and Lazaro Garcia Website Page at www.mora.k12.nm.us for important information on the Learning Plan that was created to ensure your child receives an enriching education. The Mora Independent School District has also created an app (Mora ISD) that is available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Please download the app to stay up-to-date on the current issues regarding your child’s respective school. To ensure that parents are knowledgeable about Google Classroom, MISD will be holding series of Google Classroom trainings which will be announced at a later date. Due to the current state-mandated public health order and the respect for your safety we have created online forms for you to fill out prior to the beginning of the school year. All “Google Forms” and "Jot Forms" can be submitted electronically so there is no need to send a hard-copy of the document. All other documents must be submitted via hard copy or email. Please continue to check the MISD website for updated forms. If you have any questions concerning your child’s education fell free to contact me at 575-387-3122 or via email at email@example.com. Yours in leadership and learning, Lefonso Castillo, Principal Lazaro Garcia Middle School Mora High School

July 15, 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members, As you are all aware, the pandemic has greatly changed our lives and the way we do things, sometimes this change occurs frequently and suddenly. Based on the increasing positive cases of COVID-19 and potential for exposure and infection, Mora Independent Schools will be starting the school year in a 100% distance learning environment starting on August 13th until at least September 3rd. An evaluation of circumstances prior to that date will determine if we will still be on a distance learning model for a longer period of time pending current health orders from the Governor. We made this decision to protect our students, staff, and community. We have taken feedback from all of our stakeholders in regard to the last school shutdown and we have developed a comprehensive plan for distance learning that simplifies the process, has enhanced parental and student support, and is customizable for our students. Several training sessions for parents will be made available prior to school starting. Meals will be delivered in a similar fashion as we did during the last closure period. We are also working with our partners at La Jicarita Telcom to provide internet for students. Additional devices are available for families that need those devices. We are committed to providing the best service to our students and community. Additional information for families on registration etc. will be provided as soon as possible. We truly understand difficulties we all face during school closures, but we are committed to the safety of our students and families. If you have questions, please feel free to contact my office. Sincerely Marvin MacAuley Superintendent
